The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is entering the final year of a $204 million project to reconstruct 8.5 miles of I-94 in Berrien County between Stevensville and Benton Harbor. Crews will begin work on the eastbound side of the highway next week, with lane shifts and some ramp and road closures expected throughout the year-long project.
Why it matters
I-94 is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Michigan, carrying more than 25% of the state's commercial traffic. Maintaining and improving this critical infrastructure is essential for the regional and national economy.
The details
The project will involve rebuilding the eastbound side of I-94 from Washington Avenue to Britain Avenue. Last year, crews completed work on the westbound side. The project also includes building a new bridge at Pipestone Road, which will require closures and detours in that area. Several ramps to and from eastbound I-94 will also be closed throughout construction.
- The project began in 2024 with work on the westbound side of I-94.
- Crews will begin work on the eastbound side next week, with lane shifts starting.
- Bridge demolition and closures at Pipestone Road are expected to begin in mid to late March 2026.
- The entire $204 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

What they’re saying
“We are finishing this project, fingers crossed, rebuilding the eastbound side of I-94 from Washington Avenue to Britain Avenue. Folks will remember last year we did the westbound side. The year prior was all that work around the highway exit near Stevensville. So we are in the final throes, this is the last phase.”

“I-94 is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the state. Between I-94 and I-75, they get the heaviest traffic. And as long as people keep driving on them in those volumes, we're going to have to keep investing in it to keep it in good shape.”

What’s next
Pipestone Road will likely have some closures in mid to late March as crews begin demolition of the existing bridge to build a new one. Several ramps to and from eastbound I-94 will also be closed throughout the year-long construction project.
The takeaway
This major investment in I-94 in Berrien County highlights the importance of this critical transportation corridor for the regional and national economy. While the multi-year project has caused disruptions, MDOT's commitment to maintaining and improving this infrastructure is essential for supporting the flow of people and goods through Michigan.
