The University of Michigan women's tennis team (1-4) will hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Ohio to face Xavier (2-4) on Tuesday morning (Feb. 24) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The match was added to the schedule after Michigan's match at Oklahoma State (Feb. 21) was canceled.
Why it matters
This will be the first meeting between Michigan and Xavier in program history. The Wolverines are looking to bounce back after a 1-4 start to the season, while Xavier is also seeking its first win against a ranked opponent.
The details
Michigan has five ranked singles players, led by Piper Charney (No. 12) and Lily Jones (No. 20). Jones recently became the first Wolverine to reach the 20-win mark in singles this year. Michigan is 1-0 this season when winning the doubles point, with ranked doubles teams in Jones/Jessica Bernales (No. 34) and Charney/Emily Sartz-Lunde (No. 68).
- The match is scheduled for Tuesday, February 24 at 10 a.m.
The players
Lily Jones
A senior who became the first Wolverine to reach 20 wins in singles this season, and is 10th all-time at Michigan with 105 singles wins.
Piper Charney
A ranked singles player for Michigan, currently No. 12 nationally.
Ronni Bernstein
In her 19th season as head coach of the Michigan women's tennis team, holding a 552-201 overall coaching record and leading the Wolverines to 12 Big Ten championships and six Big Ten Tournament titles.
What’s next
Michigan returns home next weekend, hosting Duke on March 1 at the Varsity Tennis Center before starting Big Ten play.
The takeaway
This match against Xavier provides Michigan an opportunity to gain momentum heading into the heart of their schedule, as they look to bounce back from a tough start to the season and build on their strong individual performances.
