The No. 8 Scarborough boys basketball team stunned the state Saturday night, shocking No. 1 Windham, 66-62 in overtime, in a Class A South quarterfinal at the Portland Expo. Why it matters
Scarborough, a low seed after going 11-7 in the regular season, pulled off a major upset against the two-time defending state champions Windham. This victory showcases the team's resilience and ability to compete against top-ranked opponents, despite being underdogs.
The details
Scarborough (13-7) took the lead midway through the first quarter and built on it by shooting 89% in the third quarter. They hit off-balance 3-pointers and finished through fouls, while defending relentlessly to keep Windham stars Moody and James below their typical output. Windham rallied in the second half and took a 59-57 lead, but Herrick tied it with a layup in the final minute to force overtime. In the extra period, Scarborough made key free throws to seal the upset victory.
