The city of South Portland has installed four new Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations in Legion Square Park near the post office. The chargers, funded in part by a grant from the Efficiency Maine Trust, will be available for public use at a cost of $0.34 per kWh and can provide up to 30 miles of range per hour of charging.
Why it matters
The new chargers aim to support the community's shift to electric vehicles by making charging more visible and convenient for local residents and visitors. As more people transition to EVs, public charging infrastructure is crucial for enabling cleaner transportation options.
The details
The four new charging ports in Legion Square Park are Level 2 chargers that can deliver up to 11.2 kW of power. The city paid for one-third of the installation costs, with the remainder funded by the Efficiency Maine Trust's EV charging initiative grant. The city is looking to expand its public EV charging offerings beyond the chargers currently available only for municipal fleet use.
