Governor Janet Mills and MaineHousing have announced the financing of 311 affordable apartments at eight development sites in cities across Maine, including Biddeford, Belfast, Lewiston, Portland, South Portland, and Rockland. This milestone comes as the state has financed over 1,000 affordable housing units in the past 12 months alone, with support from the Governor and Legislature.
Why it matters
Maine, like many parts of the country, is facing a severe housing crunch. These new affordable housing developments aim to provide more attainable rental options, especially for older adults looking to downsize, which can help free up single-family homes in the state's tight real estate market.
The details
The 311 new affordable apartments are supported by $14.3 million in federal and state affordable housing tax credits. Several of the projects are designated for adults aged 55 and over. The developments are expected to generate $116.9 million in overall economic activity in Maine.
- In 2020, Governor Mills signed into law the $80 million State Affordable Housing Tax Credit.
- Since taking office in 2019, Governor Mills has made a historic $315 million investment to address Maine's housing crunch.
