The top-seeded Mt. Abram Roadrunners defeated the fourth-seeded Monmouth Academy Mustangs 40-17 in a Class D South semifinal basketball game. Mt. Abram's defense was the key, holding Monmouth's star player Kaitlyn Frost to just 7 points on 2-for-12 shooting. Stella Peterson led Mt. Abram with 20 points and 9 rebounds, while Abby McCarty added 8 points. The Roadrunners' stifling defense limited Monmouth to just 6-for-46 shooting from the field.
Why it matters
This win advances Mt. Abram to the regional final, where they will face off against the second-seeded Buckfield. Mt. Abram's strong defensive performance against one of the top players in the league demonstrates their ability to game plan and execute a winning strategy, which will be crucial in the regional final.
The details
Mt. Abram coach Jason Wing said the team's game plan was to stop Monmouth's star player Kaitlyn Frost, and they executed that plan perfectly. The Roadrunners used a diamond-and-1 defense to limit Frost to just 7 points on 2-for-12 shooting. Monmouth coach Keith Derosby said the Roadrunners' defense was not a surprise, as Mt. Abram had beaten Monmouth twice in the regular season using similar tactics. One adjustment Mt. Abram made was not using a press defense, which is one of Monmouth's strengths.
- The game was played on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at the Augusta Civic Center.
