The Maine Department of Transportation will close the westbound lanes of Augusta's Memorial Bridge on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to conduct a routine inspection of the 1949 bridge that spans the Kennebec River. Eastbound traffic and pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge during the inspection.
Why it matters
The Memorial Bridge is a major landmark and transportation link in Augusta, connecting the city's east side to downtown and the Maine State House. Ensuring the structural integrity of the aging bridge through regular inspections is crucial for public safety and continued use of this important infrastructure.
The details
Maine DOT workers will be inspecting the 2,100-foot Memorial Bridge, which previously had its westbound lanes closed for two days earlier this month for an initial round of inspections. During Tuesday's closure, drivers coming from the western Memorial Circle will still be able to cross the bridge, but those coming from the eastern Cony Circle will need to take Bridge Street to cross the river. Pedestrians will still be able to use the northern side of the bridge.
- The bridge closure will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2026.
