After the termination of its Boardwalk tram service in October 2025, the town of Ocean City, Maryland is exploring the possibility of implementing a pedicab service as a replacement. The City Council has voted to begin soliciting proposals from potential pedicab operators to provide transportation along the Boardwalk, with a plan to start with at least 20 pedicabs, 10% of which would be able to accommodate strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers.
Why it matters
The pedicab service would serve as a new transportation option for visitors to the popular resort town, replacing the previous tram service that was discontinued after a fatal accident in 2024. Pedicabs could help maintain the Boardwalk's historic character and provide a unique experience for tourists.
The details
The proposed pedicab service would be available outside of normal bike hours and utilize the existing tram lane on the Boardwalk. Pedicabs would not be allowed to operate between South 1st Street and Wicomico Street, the area that houses the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum and Ripley's Believe It or Not! building. The town aims to have the pedicab service in place before the tram service is terminated in October 2025.
