A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the opening of The SquashWise Center, a new community facility housed within Baltimore's former Greyhound bus station. The $14.5 million renovation project transformed the 1940s-era Streamline Moderne building into a multi-purpose center that will host SquashWise's after-school tutoring and sports programs, including squash matches and tournaments. The opening was attended by over 100 people, including former Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, who praised SquashWise's work in providing constructive activities for young people in the city.
Why it matters
The selection of the former Greyhound bus station as SquashWise's new home is seen as a subtly subversive move, as squash is traditionally viewed as an elitist sport, while bus stations are often associated with more marginalized populations. By locating their center in this historic building, SquashWise aims to make the sport more accessible and inclusive for Baltimore's youth.
The details
The SquashWise Center contains six squash courts, classrooms, a student lounge, changing rooms, and offices for the organization's staff. Designed by PI.KL Studio, the renovation preserved many of the building's original Streamline Moderne architectural features, including the vintage terrazzo floors and a Greyhound racing dog emblem in the former waiting room. The Howard Street building served as Baltimore's Greyhound bus terminal from 1941 to 1987, before being converted to offices and later acquired by SquashWise in 2021.
- The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Monday, February 24, 2026.
- A Grand Opening Community Day event will be held on February 28, 2026 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What they’re saying
“You are bringing young people together. You learn so much from sports.... We need to reach out to young people today with constructive activities and you're doing that right here in downtown Baltimore at this location. This is a big deal, what you've done here.”
— Benjamin Cardin, Former Maryland Senator (Baltimore Fishbowl)
“This former Greyhound bus terminal was once a place that people passed through – a point of departure, a place that sent Baltimoreans on their way. Today, it's become something entirely different. It's a destination — a place that draws young people in, with room to grow, room to learn and room to belong. Because when we invest in young people, we change the trajectory of entire communities. Through sport, young people...learn discipline, teamwork and resilience. But here's the thing: those lessons don't just stay on the court. They travel. They show up in the classroom, in college, in careers.”
— Arunah Miller, Maryland Lieutenant Governor (Baltimore Fishbowl)
“This a beautiful place and it brings back a lot of good memories. I was asked, Did I ever take a bus out of the Greyhound terminal? I'm sure I did...There was a lot of activity here. I think we even did a little bit of campaigning here once in a while because this was a good spot to run into people, and now it continues to be a great spot for the growth of Baltimore...What you've done is preserve a piece of history.”
— Benjamin Cardin, Former Maryland Senator (Baltimore Fishbowl)
What’s next
A Grand Opening Community Day event will be held on February 28, 2026 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the opening of The SquashWise Center.
The takeaway
By transforming Baltimore's former Greyhound bus station into a state-of-the-art community hub for its youth programs, SquashWise has found an innovative way to make the traditionally elitist sport of squash more accessible and inclusive. The organization's investment in this historic building aims to provide young people in the city with a welcoming space to learn, grow, and develop important life skills through sports and education.
