The 12th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers snapped a three-game losing streak with a decisive 93-63 victory over the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday. Sophomore guard Fletcher Loyer led the way for Purdue, scoring 21 of his game-high 29 points in the first half to help the Boilermakers build a 49-28 halftime lead. Purdue's Braden Smith also had a strong game, scoring 19 points and moving within one point of becoming the first player in Big Ten history to reach 1,000 career points and 500 assists in conference play.
Why it matters
The win was a much-needed bounce-back performance for Purdue, which had lost three straight games to ranked opponents UCLA, Illinois, and rival Indiana. The Boilermakers were able to get back on track against a struggling Maryland team that is still adjusting to new head coach Buzz Williams. This victory should help Purdue regain some momentum as it prepares to face Oregon next weekend.
The details
Purdue raced out to a 10-2 lead early, with Loyer hitting two 3-pointers. The Boilermakers then went on an 11-0 run, fueled by a couple 3-pointers from Smith, to take a 25-7 advantage. Loyer added three more 3-pointers and a free throw during an 11-2 Purdue run that pushed the lead to 25 points just before halftime. The 93-63 final score marked Purdue's most lopsided victory over Maryland in the teams' 17 all-time meetings.

The takeaway
This game highlighted Purdue's ability to bounce back from a tough stretch, as the Boilermakers were able to dominate an overmatched Maryland team. The performance of Loyer and Smith in particular will be key as Purdue looks to regain its footing and make a push up the Big Ten standings in the second half of the season.
