New Bedford Axolotl Rescue Overwhelmed After Large Intakes

A New Bedford-based axolotl rescue, LibertyLand Axolotl Rescue, has recently taken in over two dozen axolotl babies in two large intakes, dubbed the 'Flower Babies' and the 'Cheese Babes'. The rescue, which is the nation's only one devoted solely to axolotls, is now facing challenges in providing the necessary care and rehabilitation for these rescued salamanders.

Axolotl overcrowding and neglect is a common issue for unprepared owners, as the aquatic salamanders can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. LibertyLand's large intakes highlight the need for more public awareness and support for specialized rescues that can provide proper care for these unique animals.

The details

The Flower Babies were surrendered last November from a home in Rhode Island, with 13 axolotls in total. Two of them suffered from a rare and often deadly condition called 'Short Toe Syndrome' and did not survive. The remaining 11 Flower Babies were fully rehabilitated and adopted out. The Cheese Babes were surrendered in January, with 16 axolotls transported from New York. They were severely malnourished, anemic, and had untreated injuries, with each missing at least one limb. Thirteen of the Cheese Babes responded well to treatment, while three were too compromised to recover. Three of the Cheese Babes have already been adopted, and the rest are either ready for adoption or still in rehabilitation.

LibertyLand Axolotl Rescue is urging anyone interested in adopting an axolotl to do their research first and is looking for experienced fosters throughout New England.
