Largest Energy Storage Facility in Massachusetts Approved for Everett

The new battery storage system will be part of a wider mixed-use development project at the former ExxonMobil tank farm site.

The Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board has approved the construction of the largest battery energy storage system in the state, to be built on the site of the former ExxonMobil tank farm in Everett. The 16.5-acre facility, developed by Texas-based energy company Jupiter Power, will include two substations and two underground transmission lines to connect to the existing Eversource Mystic Substation. The project is the first phase of the wider 'Docklands' mixed-use development, which will also include manufacturing, lab, office, retail, and residential space.

Why it matters

This energy storage facility is a key part of Massachusetts' transition to clean energy, as it will help integrate renewable power sources like wind into the electric grid. The larger Docklands development project also represents a significant redevelopment of the former industrial site, transforming it into a mixed-use hub for the city of Everett.

The details

The battery storage system will use lithium-ion batteries housed in 816 above-ground enclosures, each measuring about 19.7 feet long, 7.9 feet wide, and 9.5 feet tall. The two substations will connect the storage system to the existing Eversource Mystic Substation, allowing excess energy from the grid to be stored for later use. Beyond battery power, the facility will also serve as a connector for wind-generated and other renewable energy sources.

  • The Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board approved the project on March 1, 2026.
  • The Everett Zoning Ordinance granted Jupiter Power zoning exemptions for the project at a board meeting on Thursday.

What’s next

With the city and state approvals in place, Jupiter Power can now begin construction on the energy storage facility, which is the first phase of the larger Docklands mixed-use development project.

The takeaway

The approval of this large-scale battery storage system in Everett represents a significant step forward in Massachusetts' efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure and increase the integration of renewable power sources like wind. The project is also a key part of the broader redevelopment of the former industrial site, transforming it into a mixed-use hub for the city.
