The MBTA has partnered with Spanish manufacturer CAF to build brand new Green Line trains that are bigger, more high-tech, and more accessible than the current fleet. The first four pilot trains will be delivered by the end of 2026, with the full rollout of 102 new trains completed by 2031 at a cost of $816 million.
Why it matters
The new Green Line trains are designed to improve the rider experience with features like more digital signage, wider aisles, and level boarding. They also come equipped with enhanced safety systems to help prevent collisions and derailments, addressing concerns raised by both passengers and operators.
The details
The new Type 10 Green Line trains are 50% larger in capacity, with a more spacious interior layout and lower floors for easier accessibility. The cab now has a dedicated door to provide the operator with a distraction-free environment. Each train also comes installed with the MBTA's new Green Line Train Protection System, a safety feature aimed at enhancing collision and derailment prevention.
