Business Insurance Health has announced the development of a new Plan Quality & HRA Analyzer tool for its free Benefits Intelligence Platform. The tool is designed to score plan design quality, project Health Reimbursement Account costs, and benchmark employer competitiveness against peer companies in the same industry and size category.
Why it matters
Many small and mid-size employers lack access to actuarial benchmarking data that would allow them to evaluate whether their plan designs are competitive. Health Reimbursement Accounts also add complexity, as IRS rules governing rollover limits, forfeiture provisions, and eligible expenses can make it difficult for employers to project the long-term financial sustainability of their HRA contribution strategies.
The details
The Plan Quality & HRA Analyzer will ask employers to input their current plan design parameters, including deductible, coinsurance percentage, out-of-pocket maximum, prescription drug tiers, network type, and HRA contribution amount if applicable. The tool will then benchmark these parameters against peer companies, providing competitiveness scoring, an overall plan quality score, industry-specific benchmarking, estimated cost and enrollment implications of design changes, and HRA financial sustainability projections.
- The Plan Quality & HRA Analyzer enters development immediately, with a target launch date of April 2026.
The players
Business Insurance Health
A Boston-based independent benefits consulting firm that provides the free Benefits Intelligence Platform, which now includes six tools to help employers access actuarial-grade modeling and analysis.
Sam Newland, CFP
The founder of PEO4YOU and Business Insurance Health, who says that plan design analysis, HRA modeling, and peer benchmarking are critical to effective benefits decision-making.
What they’re saying
“Plan design matters. HRA math matters. Peer benchmarking matters. The sixth tool is intended to address those areas and round out the platform.”
— Sam Newland, CFP, Founder, PEO4YOU
What’s next
The firm is recruiting benefits consultants and actuarial science graduates to contribute to the project. Early beta testers can request access at businessinsurance.health.
The takeaway
This new tool from Business Insurance Health aims to provide small and mid-size employers with the actuarial benchmarking data and HRA modeling capabilities they need to make more informed benefits decisions and ensure their plan designs remain competitive within their industry.
