Payphones Connect Zoomers and Boomers

Neuroscience project aims to bridge generational divide through phone calls

A neuroscience project has set up two bright yellow payphones, one labeled 'Call a Boomer' in Boston and another labeled 'Call a Zoomer' in a senior community in Reno, with the goal of connecting the two loneliest generations and breaking down stereotypes through one-on-one phone conversations.

Why it matters

The project seeks to address the growing issue of loneliness among both younger and older generations, with the hope that direct person-to-person communication can help bridge the generational divide and challenge preconceived notions that Zoomers and Boomers may have about each other.

The details

The payphones were set up as part of a neuroscience research initiative to encourage more face-to-face interactions between Zoomers and Boomers. The project organizers noted that one phone call even led to a Zoomer telling a Boomer to spend less time on the phone and more time outdoors, flipping the typical stereotype.

  • The payphones were set up in March 2026.

The generation of people born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, also known as Generation Z.
