The Bee's Knees British Imports, a Boston-based retailer, is sponsoring a memorial event to honor 10 American heroes who flew with the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain in 1940, before the U.S. joined World War II. The event will unveil plaques placed in the home states of these American pilots, as well as in nationally recognized locations, to commemorate their sacrifice and bravery in defending Britain's freedoms at great personal risk.
Why it matters
The Battle of Britain was a pivotal moment in WWII, where Britain's resistance prevented Nazi Germany from gaining air superiority and paved the way for the Allied victory. The 10 American pilots who flew with the RAF during this time violated U.S. neutrality laws, risking fines and imprisonment, to support Britain's fight for democracy. Honoring their legacy helps preserve the memory of this historic battle and the individuals who played a crucial role in it.
The details
After extensive research, 10 American individuals were identified as having flown operationally with the RAF during the Battle of Britain from 1939-1940. These pilots faced significant legal risks, as they were violating U.S. neutrality laws that could result in a $10,000 fine or imprisonment. The Bee's Knees British Imports, along with the British Officers Club of New England, raised over $25,000 to purchase plaques honoring these 10 American heroes, which will be placed in their home states and at nationally recognized locations such as the RAF College Cranwell, USAF Academy, and the USAF Memorial.
- The Battle of Britain took place in the summer and autumn of 1940.
- The Battle of Britain Anniversary Memorial Project will unveil a plaque at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson, OH on March 9, 2026 at 6:00 PM EST.

What they’re saying
“The Battle of Britain was not merely an aerial campaign; it was a defining struggle for the preservation of liberty itself. In the summer and autumn of 1940, the people of the United Kingdom stood virtually alone against tyranny. Had Britain fallen, the freedoms of its citizens would have been extinguished. The courage of those who flew in defense of Britain ensured that democratic ideals endured, and their stand altered the course of history for generations to come. It is in that spirit that our Club joined in sponsoring the Battle of Britain memorial plaques — as a lasting tribute to those who safeguarded those freedoms and to remind future generations that liberty is never guaranteed, only defended.”

“James Nornington formed the British and Commonwealth Remembrance Project during COVID as a project for his kids. The organization is now national, with people across America and Canada honoring British war heroes buried in the U.S. and Canada. When he took on this Battle of Britain project, we felt compelled to support this marvelous effort to honor these ten American heroes who fought with Britain at great risk to themselves. We plan to continue supporting James through his Remembrance Project and spreading word of his tireless work through our Bee's Knees community.”
