NOLA Tree Project Offers 700 Free Trees at Giveaway Event

The largest tree giveaway of the season aims to replace trees lost during Hurricane Katrina.

Published on Feb. 24, 2026

NOLA Tree Project is hosting its biggest tree giveaway event of the year, the SUPER Big TREEsy Giveaway, on Saturday, February 28th. The event will offer 700 free trees to residents across the Greater New Orleans region, with a selection of 40 different species available. In addition, the organization will be selling citrus and fruit trees from Becnel's nursery, including specialty varieties like Hass avocado and Arbequina olive.

Why it matters

The NOLA Tree Project's mission is to replace the 100,000 trees lost during Hurricane Katrina, and this giveaway event is a significant step towards that goal. Trees provide numerous benefits to communities, including cooling neighborhoods, managing stormwater, and building a healthier, more resilient environment.

The details

The SUPER Big TREEsy Giveaway will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 28th, at the Pitot House in New Orleans. Residents from Orleans and surrounding parishes can pick up one free tree per household. The optimum time to plant trees is during the cooler seasons from October to March, as this allows the trees to establish a strong root system before the warmer, drier months.
