George Rogers Clark (32-2) defeated Simon Kenton (33-3) 66-40 in the Girls Basketball Sweet 16 semifinal game at Rupp Arena. The Lady Cardinals used a dominant first quarter to build a big lead and held on for the victory. GRC will now face Assumption in the state championship game on Saturday night.
Why it matters
This is a rematch of a regular season game where Assumption defeated GRC in triple overtime. The Lady Cardinals are looking to avenge that loss and win their first KHSAA state championship.
The details
GRC jumped out to a 23-6 lead after the first quarter, shooting 7-10 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range. Their full-court pressure defense forced 3 turnovers and held Simon Kenton to 2-10 shooting. The Lady Cardinals built a 20-point halftime lead, but Simon Kenton clawed back in the second quarter. GRC pulled away again in the second half, getting double-digit scoring from Kennedy Stamper, Jylin Edmonson, Teigh Yeast, and Kyleigh Chestnut.
