The departure of star guard Mikel Brown Jr. leaves Louisville with major questions heading into next season.Louisville TodayMikel Brown Jr., the star true freshman point guard for the Louisville men's basketball program, has declared for the 2026 NBA Draft. Brown is the fourth player to depart the Cardinals so far this offseason, joining forwards Sananda Fru, Khani Rooths and Mouhamed Camara who have all entered the transfer portal.
Why it matters
When healthy, Brown was one of the top playmakers in all of college basketball this past season. He finished the year averaging 18.2 points, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while earning Third-Team All-ACC and ACC All-Rookie Team honors.
The details
Brown set the Louisville and ACC record for most points by a freshman with 45 in a game against NC State, and also tied the program's single-game scoring record. However, he struggled with injuries, missing significant time due to a lower back issue. Brown played in only 21 games, 19 of which he started.
- On Dec. 13, Brown suffered a lower back injury that forced him to miss the next eight games.
- On Feb. 23, Brown re-aggravated the injury at North Carolina.
- On Feb. 28, Brown tried to play against Clemson but ultimately missed the final six games of the season, including all four postseason games.

The takeaway
Brown's decision to declare for the 2026 NBA Draft after just one season at Louisville is a significant loss for the Cardinals, as he was one of the most talented young players in college basketball. His struggles with injuries, however, highlight the challenges of maintaining health and consistency at the highest level of the sport.
