Hopkinsville Solid Waste has announced upcoming changes to its residential trash collection service, effective April 13. Only trash placed inside approved containers will be picked up during regular service, as bags, boxes, and other materials left outside containers will no longer be collected. Residents are also asked to break down cardboard boxes and place them inside their bins. Larger items like furniture and appliances will continue to be collected separately as bulk items, while yard waste pickup will remain unchanged.

Why it matters

The changes are intended to reduce costs and improve efficiency for the municipal waste service. When bulk items are mixed with regular trash, disposal fees increase significantly, so separating materials properly will help control rising operational expenses like labor, equipment, and transportation.

The details

Household trash includes everyday waste such as bagged garbage, food waste, and packaging that fits inside a standard container. The current $25 monthly residential rate covers one container of household trash, while bulk item and yard waste collection have been provided at no additional charge. Officials say the new rules will help them better manage the costs of transporting and disposing of the collected waste.

  • The new trash collection rules will go into effect on April 13, 2026.
