Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced a new partnership between the state's Stop Scams Initiative and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) to share resources with law enforcement agencies statewide and better protect residents against scammers. The initiative comes as Kentuckians reportedly lose over $74 million annually to cyber fraud, with scams becoming more sophisticated due to emerging technologies.
Why it matters
Scams can have devastating financial impacts on individuals and families, diverting funds from essential needs like rent, groceries, and retirement savings. This new collaboration between the Stop Scams program and law enforcement aims to enhance education, awareness, and response to combat the growing threat of fraud targeting Kentuckians.
The details
The Stop Scams Initiative will now work directly with KSP to quickly identify new scams and provide troopers with the latest information to better protect local communities. The partners, which also include the Better Business Bureau and AARP Kentucky, will focus on teaching residents how to spot and avoid common scams through the 'Pause/Check/Protect' method.
- The Stop Scams Initiative was launched in August 2025.
- National Consumer Protection Week is observed annually from March 1-7.
