Western Kentucky's annual Red & White Spring Showcase ended in a 33-33 tie as the offense and defense battled back and forth under a new scoring system implemented by head coach Tyson Helton. The offense jumped out to an early lead, but the defense rallied late to even the score on the final play of the day.

Why it matters

The competitive spring scrimmage gives Helton and his staff a chance to evaluate their roster ahead of the upcoming season, with several key position battles still undecided. The new scoring format added an extra layer of intensity as the Hilltoppers look to build on last year's success.

The details

Under the new scoring rules, the offense could earn points through touchdowns, field goals, two-point conversions and PATs, while the defense scored for turnovers, three-and-outs, stops, safeties, sacks and failed PATs. The offense started fast, with a TD pass from freshman QB Cam O'Hara to senior WR Jeremiah Carroll and a 75-yard TD strike from WR Cameron Flowers to WR Quincy Burroughs. But the defense battled back, eventually tying the game on the final play when Helton changed the rules to give them a chance at an extra point for a stop.
