Ware's absence leaves a hole in the Badgers' lineup as they push for a WBIT championship.Wichita TodayWisconsin women's basketball redshirt junior guard Breauna Ware will not travel with the team to the WBIT semifinals in Wichita, Kansas, head coach Robin Pingeton announced. Pingeton cited the long season and the need for Ware to take a pause and regroup, rather than an injury-related absence.
Why it matters
Ware has been a key contributor for the Badgers this season, appearing in 25 games and starting 13. Her absence is a significant blow as Wisconsin looks to advance to the WBIT championship game on April 1.
The details
Ware did not play in Wisconsin's WBIT quarterfinal win over Harvard or their second-round victory over Miami (FL). She saw just 54 seconds of action in the Badgers' March 19 win at Oregon State. Pingeton said that even if Wisconsin reaches the WBIT final, Ware will still be unavailable.
- Ware has not played since exiting the starting lineup in mid-January.
- She also missed UW's games against UCLA on Feb. 22, Iowa on March 1, and Illinois on March 4.
The players
Breauna Ware
A redshirt junior guard for the Wisconsin Badgers women's basketball team, who has averaged 5.4 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game this season.
Robin Pingeton
The head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers women's basketball team, who announced Ware's absence from the WBIT semifinals.
What they’re saying
“It's a long season. It's not easy being a student-athlete, so just kind of pushing pause a little bit here, kind of recentering, recalibrating.”
— Robin Pingeton, Head Coach, Wisconsin Badgers Women's Basketball
What’s next
Should Wisconsin advance to the WBIT championship game on April 1, Pingeton said that Ware still would not be available.
The takeaway
Ware's absence is a significant blow for the Badgers as they look to make a deep run in the WBIT tournament. Her leadership and production will be missed, but Pingeton is prioritizing Ware's well-being and allowing her to step back and recharge during the postseason.
