Joseph G. Schmitz, a lifelong resident of Mount Hope, Kansas, passed away on February 11, 2026, at the age of 84. Schmitz was the middle child in a family of 13 siblings and spent much of his life farming, working as a custodian, and volunteering in his local Catholic church and community.

Schmitz attended St. Joe Grade School and Andale High School, where he enjoyed woodworking and built a bedroom set for himself. He continued farming after his parents passed away and also worked as a custodian at Andale Grade School and volunteered as a custodian at St. Joe Grade School. Schmitz was also known for helping his sister Theresia at her restaurant in Andale and visiting the Mount Hope Senior Center for lunch and fellowship.
