Former Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon will take over as the new coach of Kansas City of the Summit League, multiple reports have confirmed. Turgeon, who is from Topeka, Kansas and played at the University of Kansas in the 1980s, has a long history of success as a Division I head coach, with a career record of 476-275 and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. He left Maryland by mutual agreement in 2021 after 10 seasons with the Terrapins.
Why it matters
This move represents a homecoming for Turgeon, who will now have the opportunity to lead a struggling Summit League program in his home state of Kansas. Kansas City has struggled mightily this season, posting a 4-17 record (1-7 in conference play), and will be looking to Turgeon to turn the program around.
The details
Turgeon got his first head coaching job at Jacksonville State in 1998, then coached at Wichita State (2000-07), Texas A&M (2007-11) and Maryland (2011-21) before leaving the Terrapins by mutual agreement in December 2021. Kansas City announced on Jan. 12 that current head coach Marvin Menzies will finish the season with the Roos but will not return next season.
- Turgeon left Maryland eight games into the 2021-22 season.
- Kansas City announced Menzies' departure on Jan. 12, 2026.
The players
Mark Turgeon
A veteran Division I head coach with a career record of 476-275 and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 10 seasons as the head coach at Maryland.
Damon Evans
The athletic director at the University of Maryland who reached a mutual agreement with Turgeon for him to step down as the Terrapins' head coach in 2021.
Marvin Menzies
The current head coach of the Kansas City Roos, who will finish out the 2025-26 season but will not return next year.
What they’re saying
“After several in depth conversations with [athletic director] Damon [Evans], I have decided that the best thing for Maryland Basketball, myself and my family is to step down, effective immediately, as the head coach of Maryland Basketball. I have always preached that Maryland Basketball is bigger than any one individual. My departure will enable a new voice to guide the team moving forward.”
— Mark Turgeon, Former Maryland Head Coach
What’s next
Turgeon will officially be introduced as the new head coach of the Kansas City Roos in the coming days, as he looks to turn around the struggling Summit League program.
The takeaway
This move represents a fresh start for Turgeon, who will have the opportunity to rebuild a program in his home state of Kansas after a successful but ultimately disappointing tenure at Maryland. Kansas City will be hoping Turgeon can leverage his extensive head coaching experience to quickly turn the Roos into a competitive Summit League contender.
