The Great Bend City Council will not meet this month due to scheduling conflicts, but City Administrator Logan Burns provided an update on several city projects, including work being done at the SCRA Dragstrip. Burns said concrete contractor Emory Sapp is making progress on paving the lanes, and the NHRA has announced that the Great Bend dragstrip will be one of 12 venues hosting the ET Finals race event on September 24-26.

Why it matters

The NHRA races and ET Finals event will bring increased attention and visitors to Great Bend, providing an economic boost for the community. The dragstrip renovations are an important investment in the city's infrastructure and recreational offerings.

The details

Public Lands crews are working on repairs to the playground equipment at Vets Park this week. The city council recently approved closing Lakin Avenue between Main and Williams Street for the Rocky Mountain Race Week event on June 5. At the SCRA Dragstrip, the concrete contractor has been pouring new lanes, with plans to complete the paving work in the next two weeks, weather permitting. After that, they will move on to installing the crash holes and the exterior walls and roof of the tower.

  • On Monday, the concrete contractor poured lane seven on the chase road.
  • On Tuesday, they planned to pour lane two of the race lane.
  • On Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the weather, they planned to pour lane five, which is the north outside lane.
  • The NHRA ET Finals race event is scheduled for September 24-26.
