Despite long lines and wait times, the Easter Vigil service at Notre Dame's Basilica had open seats to spare, raising questions about the university's planning and crowd control measures.Notre Dame TodayDespite record-high attendance for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults program at the University of Notre Dame, the Easter Vigil Mass at the Sacred Heart Basilica ended up having open seats available, even in the main chapel and overflow locations. Students waited in long lines starting as early as 8:30 a.m., facing inclement weather, to secure spots, but the Basilica and potential overflow site in Washington Hall were not fully utilized.
Why it matters
The long lines and wait times for the Easter Vigil service highlight the high demand for this important Catholic ritual at Notre Dame, a university with a strong religious identity. However, the availability of open seats suggests the university may need to re-evaluate its planning and crowd control measures to better match supply and demand.
The details
A record number of 36 catechumens were baptized into the Catholic faith during the Easter Vigil Mass, which gave priority seating to them and their loved ones. This limited availability for other attendees, leading students to start lining up as early as 8:30 a.m. despite the service not beginning until the evening. While the line grew throughout the day and students faced rain, wind, and cold, there were ultimately around 20 open seats left in the Basilica. An overflow location in Washington Hall was also confirmed to be closed, despite plans to livestream the service and distribute Communion there.
- The line for the Basilica officially opened at 9 a.m. on the day of the Easter Vigil service.
- Students began arriving 30 minutes early, at 8:30 a.m., to try to secure spots near the front of the line.
- The Easter Vigil Mass took place on Saturday evening.
The players
George Saliga
A freshman student who arrived early with friends to try to get a seat near the front of the line for the Basilica.
Sean Parks
A freshman student in Keenan Hall who waited in line and said the experience was worth it.
Joe Robuck
A junior student who initially thought he wouldn't be able to attend the Easter Vigil due to high demand, but was able to get a seat at the last minute.
What they’re saying
“If we saw anyone get close to the Basilica, we were going to start moving over there and try to get to the front of the line. Sure enough, there were a bunch of people who were waiting by nearby lampposts and other places.”
— George Saliga, Freshman student
“It got bad with rain, and it was windy and cold.”
— Sean Parks, Freshman student
“I was told by many people not to even try to go see Easter Vigil, because it would be so full with OCIA, so I was not considering it. I texted in there and said, 'If I were to make it to the Basilica in five minutes, what is the likelihood I would get a seat?' And I was told 100%, so I threw on a suit and sprinted over from St. Edwards Hall.”
— Joe Robuck, Junior student
What’s next
The university may need to re-evaluate its planning and crowd control measures for the Easter Vigil service to better match supply and demand, as well as ensure all available seating is utilized.
The takeaway
While the high demand for the Easter Vigil service at Notre Dame's Basilica led to long lines and wait times for students, the availability of open seats in the main chapel and unused overflow locations suggests the university needs to improve its coordination and communication around this important religious event.
