The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that Phase 2 of the Level Up 31 project in Hamilton County will begin in the coming weeks. This phase includes ramp and lane closures, detours, and local road restrictions as part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements along the U.S. 31 corridor.
Why it matters
The Level Up 31 project is a major initiative to upgrade and modernize the U.S. 31 highway through Hamilton County, which is a critical transportation artery connecting Indianapolis to the northern suburbs. These upcoming changes are necessary to facilitate the next stage of construction, but will likely cause significant traffic disruptions for drivers in the area.
The details
Some components of the project are already in place, but additional changes will go into effect in about two weeks. On March 15, the westbound I-465 ramp to southbound Meridian Street will close and remain that way through late spring. On March 16, the eastbound 106th Street will close for about a month and a half. Drivers will be directed to take detours using nearby streets and intersections. The speed limit in the work zone will remain 45 mph, and drivers should expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- On March 9, westbound 106th Street will close under U.S. 31 for about a week.
- On March 15, the westbound I-465 ramp to southbound Meridian Street (Exit 31) will close and remain that way through late spring.
- On March 16, the eastbound 106th Street will close for about a month and a half.
The players
Indiana Department of Transportation
The state agency responsible for managing and overseeing the Level Up 31 infrastructure project in Hamilton County.
What’s next
The work schedule depends on the weather and could shift based on the conditions outside, INDOT said.
The takeaway
The upcoming Phase 2 changes to the Level Up 31 project will cause significant traffic disruptions in the Hamilton County area, requiring drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their commutes. The project is a necessary step in modernizing this critical transportation corridor, but the temporary inconveniences will likely be felt by many local residents and commuters.
