Mercedes-Benz has reportedly changed its plans for the 'Little g' G-Wagen, a smaller off-roader that was initially announced as an electric-only model. According to a report from Autocar, the 'Little g' will now be offered with a hybrid powertrain option featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, in addition to the previously announced all-electric variant.
Why it matters
The addition of a hybrid powertrain option for the 'Little g' G-Wagen signals Mercedes-Benz's continued efforts to bridge the gap between its electric ambitions and internal combustion realities. This move could appeal to a wider range of customers who may not be ready to fully commit to an all-electric off-roader.
The details
The 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that will power the hybrid 'Little g' G-Wagen is produced in a joint venture called 'Horse Powertrain' with Geely and Renault. In its current applications, the engine produces just under 200 horsepower. While the 'Little g' will share some powertrain flexibility with Mercedes' latest small sedan and crossover models, it is expected to ride on a bespoke platform designed specifically for the application, making it more than just a squared-off body on an existing platform.
- Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced plans to expand its SUV line-up with the 'Little g' G-Wagen.
- In the fall of 2025, Mercedes-Benz shared teasers of the 'Little g' G-Wagen, which initially was announced as an electric-only product.
The players
Mercedes-Benz
A German luxury automotive manufacturer and a subsidiary of Daimler AG.
Geely
A Chinese multinational automotive company that has a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz and Renault called 'Horse Powertrain'.
Renault
A French multinational automobile manufacturer that has a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz and Geely called 'Horse Powertrain'.
The takeaway
The addition of a hybrid powertrain option for the 'Little g' G-Wagen demonstrates Mercedes-Benz's efforts to cater to a wider range of customers who may not be ready to fully commit to an all-electric off-roader. This move could help the company balance its electric ambitions with the realities of the current automotive market.
