Indiana BMV to Offer Blackout Design for Disability License Plates
New sleek black and white plates will be available starting this Friday.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is announcing the launch of a new blackout design for standard disability license plates. The new plates will feature an all-black background with crisp white lettering and the International Symbol of Access (ISA). The plates will be available for passenger vehicles, trucks under 11,000 lbs., motorcycles, and RVs starting this Friday.
Why it matters
The blackout license plate design has been extremely popular in Indiana, with over 100,000 sold so far. Expanding this option to disability plates gives all Hoosier drivers a sleek, personalized option while also supporting important public services provided by the BMV.
The details
Eligible Hoosiers can apply for the new disability blackout plates by completing an Application for Disability License Plate or Parking Placard and submitting it to a local BMV branch or by mail. Drivers with existing disability plates can replace them with the new blackout version for an additional $9.50 fee, plus the $45 cost of the new plate. The blackout plates can also be personalized for an extra $45 fee.
