The city of Yorkville, Illinois is once again participating in the National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, offering $50,000 in eco-friendly prizes, including $3,000 toward home utility bills, to residents who take water-saving pledges. Yorkville has placed in the top five nationally in this competition in both 2022 and 2018, and hopes to continue its strong performance as the city transitions to using Lake Michigan water due to unsustainable aquifer depletion.

Why it matters

As Yorkville experiences rapid population growth and new water-intensive data center projects, the city is focused on promoting sustainable water usage through this national challenge. The competition aims to reduce freshwater consumption, cut waste, and prevent hazardous runoff across participating cities.

The details

Residents can sign up at mywaterpledge.com to select from various eco-friendly pledge options designed to conserve water, reduce pollution, and save energy. Cities with the highest percentage of residents taking the pledge in their population category will win prizes, and one school in each winning city will also receive awards. Yorkville is also encouraging residents to participate in the MyVolunteer Water Project, a year-round platform offering hands-on sustainability projects.

  • The water conservation challenge runs from April 1-30, 2026.
