ComEd has launched a new Low-Income Discount (LID) program that provides qualifying low- to moderate-income customers in northern Illinois with percentage-based discounts on their monthly electric bills. So far, 240,000 customers have enrolled in the program, which is designed to lower energy costs to 3-6% of total household income.
Why it matters
The introduction of the LID program comes at a critical time as customers continue to feel the effects of rising energy supply costs. The program builds on existing state energy assistance programs like LIHEAP and PIPP to help eligible customers lower their energy bills.
The details
The LID program provides tiered discounts to customers with total household incomes up to 300% of the federal poverty level, which is $96,450 for a family of four. Customers can apply for LID at the same time they apply for state energy assistance programs through their local Community Action Agency. Upon qualifying, customers become eligible to receive LID for 13 to 24 months, with the average eligible customer estimated to save 5-80% on their electric bill.
- The LID program was launched in alignment with the Illinois Climate and Equitable Jobs Act.
