DuPage County Undersheriff Eddie Moore struck a man with his SUV in an Oak Brook restaurant parking lot last month, but police determined he should not face criminal charges after he stopped to check on the man and provided contact information, though a mix-up over the phone number led to a delayed report of the incident.
Why it matters
The case highlights the complexities around hit-and-run incidents, particularly when high-profile public officials are involved. It raises questions about accountability and transparency, as well as the role of police discretion in determining whether charges are warranted.
The details
According to police reports, the accident happened around 11 p.m. on February 14 when Moore was driving a Lincoln Navigator SUV through the parking lot to pick up his wife after dining at Gibson's Steakhouse. A Gibson's employee said the SUV struck him from behind, rolling over his lower right leg. The man later reported a swollen ankle, and told police Moore smelled of alcohol, though Moore denied feeling or hearing an impact. Surveillance video and witness accounts confirmed the crash, but the witnesses said they did not call an ambulance because the man declined medical assistance, out of respect for his wishes and concern over the cost.
- The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on February 14, 2026.
- The man visited the police station on February 17 after being unable to reach Moore at the phone number provided.

What they’re saying
“Due to the circumstances of the incident, including Edmond (Moore) stopping to check on (the man) and offering aid, (the man)'s refusal of medical assistance, and the subsequent discovery that the phone number provided was misinterpreted due to a language barrier, I determined that probable cause did not exist' to charge Moore with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident.”
