The Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 7 Commander Heather Apperson has announced that ISP will conduct four different enforcement patrols in the month of April. These include Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement (ACE), Distracted Driving Enforcement, Nighttime Enforcement (NITE), and Occupant Restraint Enforcement (OREP) operations across Champaign, Macon, and Vermilion counties.

Why it matters

These enforcement patrols aim to improve road safety by cracking down on impaired driving, distracted driving, and lack of seatbelt usage - all major contributors to traffic fatalities in Illinois. The patrols are funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation to help reduce crashes and save lives.

The details

The ACE patrols will focus on preventing, detecting, and enforcing violations related to impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs. The Distracted Driving Enforcement will target drivers who are not focused on the road. The NITE patrols will occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. when a higher percentage of fatal crashes happen, often involving impaired and unrestrained drivers. The OREP patrols will enforce seatbelt and child safety seat laws to increase compliance.

  • The enforcement patrols will take place throughout the month of April 2026.
