Construction has begun on the next phase of the Lake Storey multi-use walking path in Galesburg. Crews have started tree removal along South Lake Storey Road, clearing the way for the next step of constructing earth embankments and extending existing roadway culverts. This work is expected to be completed by June 1, during which time lake levels will remain lowered.
Why it matters
The Lake Storey path expansion project aims to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists around the popular recreational lake. The new path will feature a 5-foot separation from the roadway, guardrails in curved sections, and a 10-foot-wide path on the bridge over the lake.
The details
The tree removal work is scheduled to be finished by April 1, after which crews will begin constructing earth embankments along sections of the project directly adjacent to the lake and extending existing roadway culverts. This portion of the work is expected to be completed by June 1. During this time, the city will keep lake levels lowered to allow for the embankment and culvert work.

The players
Aaron Gavin
Public Works Director for the City of Galesburg.
What they’re saying
“The existing roadway culverts will have to be extended further out into the lake, and earth embankment will be built up along the edge of the lake.”
— Aaron Gavin, Public Works Director
“There will be a 5-foot separation between the path and the edge of the roadway. The edge of the roadway will be built up to create a flat area for the path, and there will be a shoulder in between the path and road. In the curved sections of the existing roadway, guardrail will be constructed between the path and the roadway to provide protection to motorists and path users.”
— Aaron Gavin, Public Works Director
What’s next
The path expansion project is being built in two phases. Work on the south side of Lake Storey is scheduled for completion during 2026. The path on the east side, completing the full loop around the lake, is scheduled for construction in 2027.
The takeaway
The Lake Storey path expansion project is a significant investment in improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists around the popular recreational lake in Galesburg. By separating the path from the roadway, adding guardrails, and widening the path on the bridge, the city is making the area more inviting and safer for all users.
