The 1956 Galesburg Silver Streaks basketball team went 26-3 and reached the Sweet 16 of the IHSA state tournament before falling to defending state champion Rockford West in a double-overtime thriller. The game, played at Wharton Fieldhouse in Moline, is considered one of the greatest in IHSA history.

The details
Galesburg raced out to a 24-13 first quarter lead, but Rockford West rallied to tie the game at 57 at the end of regulation. The teams traded baskets in the first overtime before the game went to sudden death. Rockford West's Nolden Gentry tipped in the game-winning basket to give his team the 66-64 victory. Galesburg was led by senior point guard Mike Owens, who scored 29 points in the loss.
