The newly opened Jack E. Cook Dog Park in Elgin, Illinois has quickly become a hit with local dog owners and their furry friends. The 7.5-acre off-leash dog park, which is shared between the city of Elgin and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, features separate areas for large and small dogs, as well as other amenities like walking paths and a playground. Residents have been eagerly anticipating the park's opening, and it has already attracted a steady stream of pooches and their owners looking to socialize and let off some steam.
Why it matters
The addition of the Jack E. Cook Dog Park provides a much-needed dedicated space for Elgin's dog owners to exercise and play with their pets. Dog parks help build community, allow dogs to socialize, and give urban residents an outlet to enjoy the outdoors with their four-legged companions. The park's large size and separation of small and large dogs also helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
The details
The new dog park is part of the larger 219-acre Jack E. Cook Park and Forest Preserve, with the city of Elgin owning 91 acres and the remaining 128 acres belonging to the Forest Preserve District. In addition to the dog park, the site features a playground, basketball and tennis courts, multi-use fields, and walking paths. The dog park itself took some time to open, as the city wanted to allow newly planted grass to fully take root before allowing access. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents eagerly sharing news of the park's opening on social media.
- The Jack E. Cook Dog Park opened in March 2026.
- The dog park was completed in fall 2025 but did not open until March 2026 to allow time for the grass to establish.
The players
Jack E. Cook
An Elgin native who served on the Kane County Board and was president of the Kane County Forest Preserve Board from 1994 to 2002. The park and dog park are named after him.
Josie Beecher-Crotty
Elgin's communications and engagement manager, who provided details on the planning and opening of the new dog park.
Maribel Gonzalez
The owner of a mini golden doodle named Phoenix who was enjoying the new dog park.
Debbie O'Dell
A local resident who brought her two black mouth cur dogs, Honey and Hazel, to the new dog park after previously going to the one at Schweitzer Woods Forest Preserve.
Jonathan and Yeo Eun Kim

What they’re saying
“I love it. They love it.”
— Debbie O'Dell
“Dog parks need several acres so dogs have enough space to run, with separate areas for large and small dogs. During planning, this location was identified as a good fit because it offers a large open space, has parking available, is not directly connected to a major roadway, and has limited impact on nearby residents.”
— Josie Beecher-Crotty, Elgin's communications and engagement manager
What’s next
The city plans to monitor usage and feedback on the new dog park to make any necessary adjustments or improvements in the future.
The takeaway
The opening of the Jack E. Cook Dog Park in Elgin demonstrates the community's commitment to providing high-quality recreational spaces for both residents and their canine companions to enjoy. This new amenity is likely to become a popular gathering spot that brings the local dog-owning community together.
