Published on Feb. 27, 2026

Edwardsville High School wrestlers Michael McNamara and Roman Janek have advanced to the semifinals of the IHSA Class 3A state tournament, guaranteeing themselves spots on the state podium. McNamara (106 pounds) and Janek (215 pounds) each won two matches on the first day of the tournament to reach the semifinals of their respective weight classes.

Why it matters

Advancing to the state semifinals is a significant accomplishment for high school wrestlers, as it ensures they will finish in the top six in the state. This is especially meaningful for McNamara, who came up one win short of a state medal last season, and for Janek, who placed fourth at 215 pounds a year ago.

The details

McNamara opened with a pin in 1:58 over Hampshire's Luthor Rajcevich and an 11-0 major decision over Mount Carmel's Sebastian Gracia. He will face Loyola Academy's Niko Odiotti (33-2) in the semifinals. Janek advanced with a win in 3:13 over Oak Park-River Forest's Lucas Albrecht and a win in 5:35 over Brother Rice's Dan Costello. He will take on St. Charles East's Cooper Murray (32-6) in the semifinals.
