The flood of outside money and attack ads in Illinois' heated Senate primary race exposed the growing influence of wealthy donors and special interests in shaping the political landscape.Chicago TodayIllinois Gov. JB Pritzker contributed over $10 million to help his two-time running mate, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, win last month's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, nearly all of it funneled through an ostensibly independent political action committee. The full extent of Pritzker's financial support was only revealed in new federal campaign disclosures filed this week.
Why it matters
The Senate race was the most high-profile of several crowded Democratic primaries for federal offices in Illinois, where the sources of campaign contributions and spending by outside groups became a major issue. As Illinois' congressional delegation prepares for significant turnover, money came flooding in from various interest groups.
The details
Pritzker made two contributions to Illinois Future PAC totaling $5 million in late February and early March, just after the reporting cutoff before the primary. Stratton's campaign committee raised nearly $4.8 million and spent $4.1 million, while the pro-Stratton Illinois Future PAC spent nearly $12.7 million, including almost $8.9 million on ads supporting her and over $3.3 million opposing her opponent Raja Krishnamoorthi.

What they’re saying

What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
