Students at Sidney Sawyer Elementary School in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood received a fleet of 24 bikes on Monday from the nonprofit All Kids Bike. For some of the kindergarteners, it was their first time on a bike. The school will also receive a curriculum to teach the kids how to ride, starting with the balance bike method to focus on balance and steering before using the pedals.

Why it matters

The bike donation and education program aims to provide underprivileged students access to learn essential cycling skills at a young age. Biking can improve physical fitness, coordination, and independence for children, while also promoting safe transportation alternatives in urban areas.

The details

The bikes and curriculum were provided by the nonprofit All Kids Bike, which works with law firms like Motorcycle Safety Lawyers to raise funds and donate equipment to schools that have the space to teach a bike education program. The students will first learn using balance bikes to focus on balance and steering before progressing to pedal bikes.
