Advocate Health Care has presented plans for its new Trinity Hospital to the Chicago Plan Commission as part of the site plan approval process. The 183,000 square foot, five-story hospital will be built on a 23-acre site between Brandon Ave, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and 81st Street, and will feature 52 beds, 3 operating rooms, 2 GI labs, 1 Cath lab, and 7 imaging modalities.

Why it matters

The new Trinity Hospital is part of the larger redevelopment of the former U.S. Steel South Works site led by developer Related Midwest. The hospital will provide much-needed healthcare services to the surrounding South Side community.

The details

Designed by CannonDesign, the new hospital will have a two-story base with the main lobby and community space on the ground floor, and diagnostic and treatment spaces on the first two floors. The third floor will be fully mechanical, with patient beds on the fourth and fifth floors. The building will feature sweeping curved facades made of metal paneling and glass curtain wall on the main northern facades, with metal paneling and precast concrete panels used on other facades.

  • The Chicago Plan Commission heard a courtesy presentation for the project in March 2026.
  • Construction on the new Trinity Hospital is expected to begin later in 2026.
  • The hospital is slated to open in June 2029.
