Three men have been charged with multiple felonies after leading police on a high-speed chase from DuPage County into Kane County on Wednesday. The driver allegedly reached speeds of up to 115 mph, and two firearms were thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit before all three suspects were apprehended.

Why it matters

This incident highlights the risks posed by high-speed police chases, which can endanger public safety, as well as the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with repeat offenders and illegal firearm possession.

The details

According to authorities, the chase began when Bellwood police pursued a green Jeep suspected of being involved in a shooting. An Oak Brook police officer joined the pursuit, during which the driver, identified as Cameron McClellan, allegedly reached speeds of 100 mph on the shoulder of I-88. Two firearms were reportedly thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle during the chase. McClellan then exited the highway, reaching speeds up to 115 mph and driving into the backyard of a home in Kane County, where the other two suspects, Troy Hughes and Dante Williams, fled on foot. All three men were eventually apprehended and face a range of felony charges, including armed violence, aggravated fleeing, and unlawful possession of weapons by convicted felons.

What they’re saying

“It is alleged that these three defendants, two of whom are convicted felons currently on parole and consequently prohibited from legally possessing a firearm, were in possession two firearms as the driver of their vehicle, Mr. McClellan, fled authorities at a high rate of speed in rush hour traffic.”

— Robert Berlin, DuPage County State's Attorney (DuPage County State's Attorney's Office)

“This incident highlights the importance of law enforcement agencies maintaining practical, common-sense pursuit policies. Criminals like these, and many others, often believe they can commit crimes — even violent ones — with impunity if they simply flee from the police, assuming they will avoid capture. They quickly learned otherwise when they traveled west of I-294 and were spotted by the Oak Brook Police Department.”

— Brian Strockis, Oak Brook Chief of Police (Oak Brook Police Department)

What’s next

The judge in the case will decide on April 6 whether to allow the suspects to be released on bail.

The takeaway

This high-speed chase underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with repeat offenders and illegal firearm possession, as well as the need for balanced pursuit policies that prioritize public safety while still holding criminals accountable.
