The Buffalo Sabres have acquired defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for forward prospect Isak Rosen, defenseman Jacob Bryson, a 2027 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick. The Jets retained 50% of Schenn's contract as part of the deal.
Why it matters
The Sabres were spurned in their attempt to acquire Blues star Colton Parayko, so they turned to the Jets to bolster their left-shot and right-shot defensive depth ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The additions of Stanley and Schenn should help improve Buffalo's blueline as they push for a playoff spot.
The details
Stanley, 27, is a 6-foot-7 defenseman who had a career-high 21 points in 59 games for the Jets this season. Schenn, 36, is an 18-year veteran known for his strong defensive play, and he won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021. The Sabres also acquired center Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers in a separate depth move.
- The trade was completed on Thursday, March 6, 2026, ahead of the NHL trade deadline on Friday.
The players
Logan Stanley
A 27-year-old defenseman who has played his entire 6-year NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets.
Luke Schenn
A 36-year-old veteran defenseman who has won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning and is now joining his fifth team since 2021.
Isak Rosen
A 22-year-old forward prospect who was the Sabres' 14th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
Jacob Bryson
A 28-year-old defenseman who is an unrestricted free agent with a $900,000 cap hit.

What they’re saying
“We must address our blueline needs as we push for the playoffs, and adding Stanley and Schenn gives us more depth and experience on defense.”
— Jarmo Kekalainen, Sabres General Manager (ESPN)
What’s next
The Sabres will look to integrate Stanley and Schenn into their lineup as they make a final playoff push in the final weeks of the regular season.
The takeaway
The Sabres were unable to land their top target in Colton Parayko, but they were able to address their defensive needs by acquiring the veteran duo of Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Jets. These additions should help solidify Buffalo's blueline as they aim to secure a postseason berth.
