A new study analyzing over 1.3 million Google reviews has ranked Chicago as the world's least authentic city, followed by Venice, Italy, and Las Vegas. The study, conducted by travel insurance provider InsureandGo, looked at traveler feedback on everything from restaurants and museums to malls and markets in 144 popular destinations. Cities with the highest 'authentic' scores had reviews filled with phrases like 'traditional' and 'local,' while those deemed 'inauthentic' were described as 'overpriced' and 'tourist traps.'

According to the study, over half of the top 10 least authentic cities are located in the U.S., with Chicago scoring just 2 out of 100 points on the authenticity index. Many of the complaints about Chicago centered around the heavily touristed areas like Navy Pier, the Loop, and the Riverwalk, which are known for souvenir shops, pricey dining, and other commercial attractions aimed at visitors. However, the city is also renowned for hosting traditional seasonal celebrations and having a vibrant LGBTQ+ community, suggesting more authentic experiences can be found by venturing beyond the most popular sights.
