University hosts events on main campus and at Carruthers Center to honor Black history and progress

Northeastern Illinois University is celebrating Black History Month 2026 with a series of events open to the public. The celebrations are being organized by the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs and will take place on the main campus as well as at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS).

The details

This year's national theme for Black History Month is 'A Century of Black History Commemorations,' marking 100 years since the founding of Negro History Week in 1926. Northeastern President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan is encouraging the university community to learn more about the theme and participate in the celebrations and programs being held across the main campus, El Centro, and Carruthers Center locations, as well as throughout the Chicagoland area.
