The U.S. Army's recognition of LC State's nursing program highlights the school's commitment to training the next generation of military healthcare professionals.Lewiston TodayLewis-Clark State College's nursing program has been designated as a preferred institution by the U.S. Army's Enlisted Commissioning Program (AECP), one of only 14 schools nationwide to receive this distinction. The AECP allows active-duty service members to earn a bachelor of science in nursing degree and commission as officers in the Army Nurse Corps upon graduation.
Why it matters
This recognition highlights the quality and reputation of LC State's nursing program, which has consistently maintained high NCLEX pass rates and provides active-duty students with an affordable, accelerated path to becoming commissioned officers. The program also attracts a diverse student body, bringing in perspectives from service members around the world.
The details
To receive AECP approval, schools must meet strict criteria, including offering a BSN within 24 months, being located near a military treatment facility, keeping tuition under $15,000 per year, maintaining accreditation, and achieving a first-time NCLEX pass rate of 90% or higher for the last three years. LC State is the only school in the western U.S. to earn this designation.
- LC State has been a preferred AECP school for the past several years.
- Enrollment in the Enlisted Commissioning Programs at LC State has grown from 4 students in Fall 2024 to 13 students in Fall 2025.

What they’re saying
“It's really easy to get overshadowed by big schools. I know what a gem we are, I'm proud that we get to be one of 14 schools. We have a great nursing program, so it is really cool to get to have some recognition on a little bit bigger scale.”
— Tiffany Pilon, Director of the LC State Healthcare Education Center
“When I came to the United States, I was the first (of my family) to go to college. Nursing was something that was on my mind, and when I joined the military, it solidified my decision.”
— Mark Kogo
“I'm glad to be here. And after (graduation), we'll see what the future has for me.”
— Mark Kogo
What’s next
Mark Kogo hopes to eventually work as a nurse in an intensive care unit or operating room setting, and potentially pursue a career as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).
The takeaway
