Idaho Fish and Game has announced that the application period for controlled hunts for moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat will open on April 1 and run through April 30. Hunters across the state, both residents and nonresidents, can submit applications online, at Fish and Game offices, through licensed vendors, or by phone. Successful applicants will have high success rates, with 87% for moose, up to 81% for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, and 100% for mountain goats reported in 2025.
Why it matters
These controlled hunt tags are among Idaho's most sought-after big game opportunities, offering hunters the chance to pursue some of the state's most iconic and challenging species. The application process is highly competitive, with nonresident tags capped at 10% for each species.
The details
Applicants must have a valid 2026 Idaho hunting or combination license to apply and will be required to pay both an application fee ($16.75 for residents, $45.75 for nonresidents) and the full tag fee at the time of submission. Tag costs range from $183.50 to $216.50 for residents, depending on price lock status, and $2,672.50 for nonresidents. Only one application may be submitted per person for either moose, bighorn sheep, or mountain goat, and those who apply for one of these species will not be eligible for most controlled hunt drawings for deer, elk, or pronghorn during the same year.
- The application period opens on April 1, 2026 and runs through April 30, 2026.
- Drawing results are expected to be available online in early June 2026.

What’s next
Successful applicants will be notified in early June 2026 and will need to purchase their tags before the start of the respective hunting seasons.
The takeaway
The controlled hunt application process for Idaho's most coveted big game species is highly competitive, but offers hunters the chance to pursue these iconic animals with high success rates. Careful planning and early application submission are key for those hoping to secure one of these prized tags.
