The Idaho Transportation Department is launching a $9 million pavement rehabilitation project on a seven-mile section of State Highway 3 between Fernwood and Clarkia, Idaho. The work will include full reconstruction, cement stabilization, and resurfacing, with single-lane traffic and delays of up to 15 minutes expected throughout construction.
Why it matters
This major infrastructure project on a key regional highway will improve the aging roadway and driving conditions, but will also cause significant traffic disruptions for commuters and travelers in the area over the next year.
The details
The project will cover a seven-mile stretch of Highway 3 starting near milepost 52 at Pine Drive and moving north. Some sections will be fully reconstructed due to aging materials dating back to the 1950s, while others will undergo a cement stabilization process. Additional areas will receive resurfacing, and crews will also replace culverts and make minor guardrail improvements.
- Work is scheduled to begin next week and be completed by the end of 2026.
- Early work will reduce daytime travel to a single alternating lane, with two lanes reopening overnight.
- From July through October, single-lane traffic will remain in place around the clock, with delays of up to 15 minutes.
The players
Idaho Transportation Department
The state agency responsible for maintaining and improving Idaho's transportation infrastructure.
What’s next
A second project is also planned along Highway 3 beginning in June or July, which will include sealcoating and sign replacement along a roughly 10-mile stretch.
The takeaway
This major pavement rehabilitation project on Highway 3 will significantly improve the aging roadway, but will also cause substantial traffic disruptions for commuters and travelers in the area over the next year. Drivers are advised to plan for delays, follow posted instructions, and slow down in the work zones.
