Idaho Fish and Game has announced a second drawing for nonresident deer and elk hunting tags that will run from February 5 to February 15. This opportunity is for hunters who were unsuccessful in the first general season drawing that took place in January. Applicants must hold a valid 2026 Idaho hunting license, and licenses are nonrefundable if a hunter does not draw a tag.
Why it matters
Idaho's deer and elk populations are carefully managed, and the state uses a drawing system to allocate a limited number of nonresident hunting tags each year. This second drawing gives more hunters a chance to participate in Idaho's popular big game seasons.
The details
Hunters who were successful in the January drawing are not eligible to apply again for the same species in the second draw. There are also no leftover tags available for Disabled American Veterans at this time, as those hunters have until March 20 to purchase tags from the first drawing. Nonresident hunters may submit up to two applications - one for deer and one for elk - and each application can include up to five hunt choices. Group applications of up to four hunters are allowed, with all group members receiving a tag if one is drawn.
- The second nonresident drawing for remaining general season deer and elk tags will run from February 5 through February 15.
- Disabled American Veterans have until March 20 to purchase tags from the first drawing.

The takeaway
This second drawing gives more nonresident hunters an opportunity to participate in Idaho's coveted deer and elk hunting seasons, which are carefully regulated to ensure the long-term sustainability of the state's big game populations.
