Alliant Energy's Battery Storage Facility Now Operational in Iowa

The 99-megawatt system can store electricity from nearby renewable sources.

Published on Feb. 12, 2026

Alliant Energy has completed construction on a large battery energy storage system (BESS) in Wever, Iowa. The facility includes nearly 130 battery containers capable of storing about 99 megawatts of energy, enough to serve approximately 100,000 homes. The system can capture electricity produced by a nearby solar field as well as other renewable sources like wind, then release that power to the grid when demand is high.

Why it matters

Battery storage is a critical component of the transition to renewable energy, allowing utilities to capture and distribute clean electricity when it's needed most. This facility in Southeast Iowa will help Alliant Energy integrate more renewable generation onto the grid and provide reliable power to customers.

The details

Construction on the battery storage project began in May 2025. The facility in Wever includes nearly 130 battery containers that can store about 99 megawatts of energy. This is enough electricity to power approximately 100,000 homes. The BESS can capture electricity produced by the adjacent solar field as well as other renewable sources like wind, then release that power to the grid when demand is high.

  • Construction on the project began in May 2025.
  • The battery storage facility became fully operational in February 2026.
